About Us

ModHomeEc is a lot of Home Ec, a lot of Shop Class, and very little cooking.

I am Shelly Leer a.k.a. ModHomeEcTeacher.
I earned my B.S. Degree in Textiles and Design Education from Butler University. After a career detour as a paralegal, I took some upholstery classes and subsequently started my own upholstery design studio through which I did custom work for customers, designers and fabric stores for fifteen years. For the past two years I’ve been teaching upholstery classes at my studio in beautiful Carmel, Indiana (just north of Indianapolis). It was just high time I shared the back room, professional tips and techniques I’ve learned throughout the years.

I write a weekly DIY column for The Indianapolis Star, I’m a featured writer at www.Curbly.com, and I contribute DIY projects to ApartmentTherapy-Chicago. I’ve just finished co-writing the third in a series of Curbly’s ‘Make It’ books and I am so proud to have a project included in the upcoming Design Sponge Book.

More good news! My studio space is limited and there are so many of you interested in learning how to upholster, I am very excited to announce that I’ll be offering a series of online video upholstery classes with a target release of mid-November.

“A moving picture is worth a thousand still photos of upholstery techniques.” Shelly Miller Leer
